RAVEN BUSH X CORAL DOLPHIN: ‘MOONGLADES’
d. The bright reflection of moonlight across a body of water.
MOONGLADES is a collaboration between composer/producer Raven Bush and Directed/Choreographer Coral Dolphin.
In the words of Marcus Garvey; ‘We are going to emancipate ourselves from the mental slavery because whilst others might free the body, none but ourselves can free the mind’.
Coral believes that Marcus Garvey felt there was a deeper freedom that we all possess and the first change towards that freedom takes place in the mind. The deconstruction and rewiring of our minds go deeper than flesh.
The dancers symbolize the “flesh” as a “corrupted collective consciousness”, while metaphorically being representations of the pain, suffrage and dehumanization caused by the effects of systematic indoctrination that is forced upon our lead dancer - Stephanie Carlos.
In the end, she is freed.
Freed from herself.
From the Costume Design point of view, the challenge was to make each of these dimensions very different from each other, to mark the difference between the lightness of a white dress in the woods to the density of the weight of a body in the depths of the ocean. And the the structure of a body suit in the city to the freedom of an African ceremonial dance costume.
Working with Coral was a true creative experience.
